Getting Back Into Routine After Summer

Summer has a way of throwing us off our regular schedule. Between vacations, BBQs, late nights, and long weekends, it’s normal if your workouts, nutrition, or sleep habits have slipped a little. The good news? September is the perfect time to reset and get back into a routine that supports your health and energy.

Here are three simple ways to get started without feeling overwhelmed.

🌙 Prioritize Sleep (7–9 Hours)

One of the most powerful things you can do to feel better, recover from workouts, and manage stress is to get enough sleep.

During summer, it’s easy to stay up later, but as you settle back into routine, aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night.

Why it matters:

  • Sleep regulates hormones that affect appetite and energy.

  • It helps your muscles recover and grow stronger from your workouts.

  • Better sleep = more consistent choices during the day.

Start by setting a consistent bedtime, even if it’s just 15–20 minutes earlier than usual, and build from there.

🏋️ Book in Your Workouts

If your workouts aren’t scheduled, they’ll often get pushed aside. Think of your training like an important meeting—you wouldn’t cancel on your boss or a client, so don’t cancel on yourself.

Why it matters:

  • You’re more likely to follow through when it’s in your calendar.

  • Consistency beats intensity—showing up regularly builds momentum.

  • Training at set times helps reinforce your routine and structure your day.

Pick the days and times you’ll train each week and block them off in your calendar. Protect that time and treat it as non-negotiable.

🌱 Don’t Overhaul Everything at Once

After summer, it’s tempting to go “all in”—overhauling your workouts, nutrition, and lifestyle all at once. But that usually leads to burnout.

Instead, focus on one or two habits at a time. Maybe you start by locking in your bedtime and booking your workouts. Once those feel steady, then add nutrition goals, more daily movement, or meal prep.

Progress sticks when it’s built slowly and sustainably.

✅ The Bottom Line

Getting back into routine after summer doesn’t need to be complicated. Prioritize your sleep, book your workouts, and don’t try to change everything all at once. Small, consistent steps will help you build momentum and get back on track in a way that lasts.
